Vessel discharging baled waste

Solid fuels such as woodchips, bark, pellets, fuel wood, baled waste etc, are important products for the port of Hargs Hamn, with customers such as Vattenfall, Norrenergi, Stockholm Exergi and E.ON.

  • There are several major cogeneration plants in the region.
  • Throughout the 2000s, the use of biofuels has exceeded targets and forecasts.
  • Future expected growth of fuels, such as wood chips, bark and pellets.

The area north of Stockholm has three waste-fuelled heating plants that each incinerate more than 100,000 tonnes annually. More plants of the same size are planned. In Sweden as whole, waste incineration provides a big part of district heating production.

Existing and planned waste-fuelled heating plants in Stockholm-Uppsala and the EU's Landfill Directive (which encourages countries to export their waste), create good opportunities for the port of Hargshamn for continued handling of imported volumes of baled fuels.

Our region is extensively forested and the Port of Hargs Hamn has established customer relations with several large forestry companies.

The port has long experience of loading timber trains.

Pumice-stone

Scrap metal exports may increase by a further 30,000-50,000 tonnes/year, above the current approximately 40,000 tonnes/year, primarily in fragmented scrap.

Ash from cogeneration/heating plants is a potential new product from existing customer relations. Volumes of 30,000-50,000 tonnes/year.

Construction materials, e.g. sheet pilling, girders etc.

House modules.

Vessels delivers pumice from Iceland which is used as soil remediation, loose or mixed with soil / compost in sack.

Grain

slide 3
Lantmännen has established an operation in the port and has been conducting grain reception in the area since 2019. The business includes a reception and sampling plant, dryer, cleaning and storage. The Port of Hargs Hamn will play a significant role in Lantmännen's export operations and capacity and volume are expected to increase in the coming years. In 2019, 75,000 tonnes were exported from the port.

Bulk grain are loaded and unloaded in Hargs Hamn on a regular basis. We accept self-unloaders. Ships are loaded by crane from a purpose built hold on dock. Currently, one warehouse is used for storage and we plan to add additional storage capacity.

The port has experience from handling of a wide variety of buildning materials, stuffed, piece by piece, or in bulk, for direct delivery or for intermediate storage in the port. As the port has a favourable geographic position versus the rapidly expanding Stockholm-Uppsala region, we ecpect this type of goods to increase in volume. During recent years we have received a high number of shipments of housing modules, and we do have expertise to unload and store modules as well as load vehicles for final delivery.

Scrap metal

slide 5

About 50 000 metric tonnes of scrap metal are exported via Hargs Hamn every year. Currently, four different companies have established scrap yards in the port. One of these companies operate a metal fragmentary. The port loads the ships and also assists these companies with stacking and other services at their yards.
